Mäni's Halloween Goodies

Well finally... for those of you who've been waiting with such patience, Mäni's has some "new news" just in time for this Halloween!!!

Starting this weekend, Mäni's will be offering a few unusual versions of our traditionally healthier cakes in the spirit (pun intended) of Halloween.

We'll have Jack-O-Lantern cakes, Spider cakes, Ghostly cakes and even Skull cakes for you to choose from.

Of course, as always, you are invited to order your Halloween cakes early to insure availability.

We will have some pre-made, but they usually sell quickly... which pleases us very much!!!

To go along with the Halloween season we will also be baking our famous Hollywood Cheesecake, made with Cream Cheese and Vanilla, a touch of Lemon and Orange peel and sweetened with Fruit Juice Reduction. Try it with our blueberry sauce, it's evil!

Ya know... it just wouldn't be Halloween without our scrumptious Pumpkin Cheesecake. We take our fabulous Hollywood Cheesecake and add pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg for a cheesecake so good...it's a sin!

So come in and scare us to death! Oh, and bring the kids with you. We'll treat them to a free "Witches Finger"; and that's no trick!!!

Mäni's Morsel: Evolution of a Holiday

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

imageThe Celts celebrated their new year on November 1st, which marked the end of summer, the harvest and the beginning of the dark cold winter; a time of year that was often associated with human death. (how cheerful!)

Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.

On the night of October 31st, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

By A.D. 43, The Romans had conquered the Celts and over the next four hundred years two festivals of Roman origin were...

Pumpkins Really Are Good For U!

image

I have a subscription to RealAge.  Often they have some good health info.  So I couldn't help but passing this along, since it's about the great healthy properties in pumpkin!  It's actually good for our joints, check it out at their daily tip of the day.

Love those pumpkins!

Mäni's Morsel: "Simple as Pie!"

image

Yes, it's that time of year again.  The days grow shorter and cooler; and soups, stews and warm, cozy foods become just a little bit more attractive.

With the beginning of Fall, a few weeks ago, Mäni's introduced our new line of soups; and the weather very kindly gave us a couple of overcast "snugly" days to set the right tone.

image Well once again the weather provides us with the perfect mood corresponding with the return of Pumpkin Yam Pie season at Mäni's.

Now some are sure to think we have a kind of "pact" with Mother Nature... we assure you we don't!

But one thing is for sure. Whether it's good karma or serendipity or just a coincidence, it's definitely in the air... it's pie season at Mäni's!

PUMPKIN & PUMKINS

image

Yes, it's pumpkin season again and as in years past, due to popular demand we've brought back our pumpkin pies and pumkin tarts.

This year we'll also have pumpkin soup, which is soooo gooood!

The daily soups at Mäni's on Fairfax are now on a two week schedule, so by the end of this week, we'll have our new schedule ready for the next two weeks.  You can bet on pumpkin soup being on it!

And if you have a costume or are just scary, stop by on Halloween day for a Witch's Finger! Oh, and bring the kids too!!

Really Just Out of the Oven

Many of you may have heard that Mäni's no longer sells wholesale to stores like Mothers Markets and Whole Foods.  While we regret many of our customers no longer have the convenience of buying our products at these fine stores, it has now allowed us to change our production and baking times to better suit our customers here on Fairfax.

Now when you come into Mäni's on Fairfax in the afternoon and evening, you can ask your counterperson, what's just come out of the oven?  They can simply walk back to the bakery production area and scan our bakers racks for products. Some may still even be warm or hot!  Wow, ever since I was a little kid I loved to eat fresh baked goods right out of the oven.

So whether your fav is a chocolate chip cookie, or a pumpkin cranberry muffin, you can now get one fresher than ever.  So make friends with your favorite counterperson and find out what's available just out of the oven.  Oh yeah, and don't forget about the scones and especially the turnovers!

Mäni's Bakery Café Announces Their Newest Sweet Spot

Hollywood bakery-to-the-stars opens communication to customers with a new blog.

Los Angeles, CA (October, 2005) - Mäni's Bakery Cafe, an independent eatery that specializes in healthy alternatives to baked goods and cuisine, announced today the launch of their new blog manisblog.com. Dubbed as the Hollywood bakery to the stars, Mäni's has become famous in the Los Angeles community for being one of the first cafes to integrate organic and less refined ingredients into their baked goods and fare. Much of Mäni's acclaimed offerings are prepared with organically grown wheat flour and ingredients that retain more nutritional value than what is found in typical baked goods. Mäni's motto to offer good food that is good for you, has created best selling items such as the Chocolate Truffle Cream Heart Cookie and their famous turkey chili, which has attracted celebs including Kate Beahan and Lucia Rijker.

"Mäni's blog will serve as a virtual suggestion box, as well as a way to communicate both important and interesting health-related information directly to our clientele," says founder Larry Maiman. "With healthy eating at the top of everyone's minds, it is vital that we take another step towards opening a dialogue with our customers."

Mäni's Bakery Café, which opened its doors in 1989 and is still at its original location on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, felt a priority to interact with customers - something few in the industry have chosen to do. In addition to offering the most up-to-date information about what the restaurant and bakery are doing to make food healthier, the blog will be an educational format that promises to offer nutritional, lifestyle and health information as well as recommended links to other sites in the industry.

Mäni's Morsel: "Club Med"... sort of.

image

In last week's Morsel, Olive Oil or Olive "Oilay", we talked about how fabulous olive oil is and how studies show it's use, in combination with the "traditional" eating practices of the people around the Mediterranean, called "The Mediterranean Diet", can significantly reduce the risk of early death.

So, for those of you not familiar with The Mediterranean Diet, let's take a quick look inside the secrets of this new way of eating... you just might want to join the "club".

Mäni's Morsel: Is it Olive Oil or Olive "Oilay"?

image

According to "Olive Oil Health & Nutritional Information", since 11/01/04, the Food and Drug Administration (USA) now permits the following claim on olive oil labels:

"Limited and not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating about two tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to monounsaturated fat in olive oil. To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil should replace a similar amount of saturated fat and not increase the total amount of calories you eat in a day."

We all know that olive oil is good for you, and many believe it's an "elixir of life", that not only helps prevent heart attacks and arteriosclerosis, it protects against colon cancer, reduces the effects of aging, and may even act as an aphrodisiac!

imageHmmm ...for the aphrodisiac effect do we drink it or just rub it all over each other? Was there a deeper symbolic meaning in the fact that Popeye had a thing for Olive Oil?

We may never know, but...

Making Lemonade When Life Gives You A Lemon

Well, we got our lemon alright!  We were hit with a maintenance issue that required us to be closed for 3 days.  Since we're open 18 hours a day 7 days a week, we had to close to take care of a much needed issue.  So we decided to close during our slower days, Monday through Wednesday and re-open on Thursday.  We're very sorry to have inconveniced our valued guests and certainly our regulars!

So during that time we've had an entire company meeting at LACMA in the park and came up with some great ideas from staff to better serve our guests.  As soon as they're implemented, we'll let you all know.

imageWe've finalized our new color scheme for retail, finalized our new casual shirts for retail team members, shopped for new chairs for the restaurant and more.

So that's the lemonade we made from the lemon we were dealt.  We also passed out coffee coupons to customers who came by while we were closed.  If you came by and we were closed, just ask us for your complimentary coffee drink, next time you come to visit us for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack.
