Tomorrow, May 1st, is looking to be a substantial demonstration for immigrant rights. We thank our employees for supporting us and preparing for this historic national boycott. What began just a few weeks ago in LA now seems headed as a nationwide walk out to show that a day without immigrants will just not be business as usual. At Mäni’s on Fairfax, we thoroughly researched how our mostly Latino staff felt about participating in tomorrow’s march. Although we wanted to be able to give our guests and customers all the services we normally provide everyday, it will not be possible tomorrow. We will be open, and the restuarant will be serving a limited menu since we will have no cooks, no chefs, no prep cooks, no bussers, no dishwashers, all the wonderful folks who make Mani’s the great place that it is. We will be open with the following menu: Mani’s Special Menu: Breakfast: Choose from our full menu of breakfast pastries Granola Bowl Acai & Granola Bowl Lunch: All wraps will be served with mixed greens or soup of the day. Substitute Turkey Chili for side add $2 Tuna Salad Wrap – Tuna salad, mixed greens, tomato on a whole wheat wrap Tofu Wrap – Marinated tofu steak, arugula or mixed greens, walnut basil pesto, tomato on a whole wheat wrap BBQ Chicken Wrap – Diced chicken breast, mixed greens, green onions, cheddar cheese, on a whole wheat wrap, with BBQ sauce and sour cream on the side Chicken Caesar Wrap – Diced chicken breast, romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese on a whole wheat tortilla with Caesar dressing on the side. Chicken Pesto - Diced chicken breast, mixed greens, walnut basil pesto, tomato on a whole wheat wrap. Chicken Club Wrap – Diced Chicken breast, romaine lettuce, turkey bacon, tomato and cheddar cheese on a whole wheat tortilla. Choice of dressing for wraps: Ranch, Caesar, Artichoke, Balsamic, Lime Cilantro Soups: Chicken Noodle, Black Bean (Vegan), Turkey Chili, Veggie Chili The wraps are all $9 Granola Bowl is $7.95 Acai Granola $8.95 Standard soup prices: 4.95 Cup 5.75 Bowl Chili 6.95 Cup 7.95 Bowl We thank our employees for supporting us and preparing for this historic national boycott.

Aid for Aids will receive a total of One thousand two hundred ninety-seven dollars from Mäni’s and donations made by customers. Thanks to everyone who ate breakfast, lunch or dinner here yesterday and everyone who bought bakery and beverage items. You made a difference.

After a week-end and half of today, Monday, technicians have our main oven back up and running. So don’t hesitate now or tomorrow to come on in for your favorite, muffins, cookies, eclairs and more. Call us if you’re interested in a particular product today, but tomorrow we estimate we’ll be almost back to full production. By tonite we should have much of our popular items replentished. And just in time, since we’re tired of customers being disappointed. So hopfully the worst is over and Murphy has gone home.

Life is full of sweet surprises. Especially when it comes to a bakery. And sometimes, the surprises aren’t so friendly. For instance, when the oven doesn’t work! If you were in this weekend, you probably noticed our oven was down and we were limited to small quantities in a smaller oven. But, we hung in there, and so did you. Throughout both weekend days we kept your favorite items as stocked as possible so people wouldn’t start to feel faint without an eclair or truffle heart. And, I got to thinking...Spring has begun, and summer is near. There are a bunch of summertime favorites that I am really looking forward to launching this year. Growing up in the Northeast, Rhubarb and Blueberries were fresh and everywhere. We would go out to local marshes where blueberries were plentiful and pick all day. And, if making a Rhubarb pie isn’t my favorite thing in the world, which it is, then I don’t know what I would be looking forward to more! Rhubarb is one of those vegetables, that is simply the most divine thing I have ever had. It actually is a vegetable. And, get this… It’s a member of the Buckwheat family. Buckwheat Flour comes from the seeds of a plant related to Rhubarb. But, rhubarb is really quite different. And Buckwheat is a whole other issue. We can get into the details on these two plants and ingredients when I release the Rhubarb items. Get ready!

Get Fresh, Go Green with Mäni’s Bakery Café has been proven to be of use to our customers. The awareness of eating and drinking green, and its benefits for our bodies has shown in the popularity of our new items. And not only that, people are modifying existing dishes for the added benefit of eating green. It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm. Small changes like these in our diets, are what provide the most benefits. And, the awareness as well brings us to another level of participation. The Green campaign has gone so well, we will be keeping all of our new items, and expanding our Green menu to give you new Green items in the future. If you have suggestions, or comments, we would love to hear them. And, tell me what you think of Get Fresh, Go Green! How do you like the new items, our Total-Green and Berry-Green smoothies, or the Matcha Latte? And we definitely want feedback on the Kale and Collard greens. Let us know what your thoughts are below, we are very interested. Go ahead, add a comment!

Over the past few weeks we have mentioned some health benefits of various greens. We have mostly talked about anti-oxidants, and cancer fighting benefits. Well, every week, we throw something else at you! It is the green season. Things are turning green outside, flowers are blooming, and at Mäni’s things are greener than ever. Collard Greens! I bet you didn’t see that coming. No, seriously, collard greens. I’ve known they were good for me. But when I found out how good they really are for me, and you, I almost freaked out. Lets talk about our immune system for a second. In addition to all the standard (now that we are infatuated with the benefits of eating green) cancer fighting anti-oxidant benefits, we now have some powerful immune boosting elements. Mainly then fact that 1 cup of collard greens contains 118% of your RDA for Vitamin A, 57.6% of Vitamin C, and 53.5% of the rare element Manganese (which helps your body utilize Vitamin A, which protects our mitochondria, which is the power plant in almost every cell in our body). Not to mention everything else listed in this helpful breakdown of all the nutrients in one cup, cooked. And, if you are into exercising and keeping your body in tune, which I believe is the third element of Balanced Living, Collard Greens are also a magnificent source of calcium. One cup providing 22% of your RDA, 1 cup of milk provides 30% of your RDA. Are you Vegetarian? Don’t drink milk? Go green yo! So, if you haven’t tried collard greens before, come by Mäni’s Bakery Café, our restaurant and bakery on fairfax, and starting Wednesday we will be serving collard greens. We’ve been serving Kale, Collard’s cousin, since “Get Fresh. Go Green” started.
