MÄNI'S ON FAIRFAX MAKES dineLA RESTAURANT WEEK DEBUT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MÄNI’S ON FAIRFAX MAKES dineLA RESTAURANT WEEK DEBUT
Hollywood eatery-to-the-stars invites LA to take a bite of their specially priced lunch & dinner menus during two-week event

Los Angeles, CA (January, 2008) – Mäni’s on Fairfax, http://www.manisonfairfax.com, the celebrated café specializing in deliciously healthy baked goods and cuisine, announced its dineLA Restaurant Week debut. The annual event introduces diners to the vast array of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County for two consecutive weeks: January 27 – February 1, 2008, and February 3 – February 8, 2008.

Known for pioneering the guilt-free dessert movement with their wholesome cooking free of additives, artificial sweeteners and preservatives, Mäni’s is much more than just a bakery. The café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner using the same philosophy applied to its sought-after sugar-free sweets: nutritious versions of gourmet foods for the health conscious foodie.

“Participating in dineLA Restaurant Week officially puts us on the culinary map.” says founder and CEO Larry Maiman. “We have been taken seriously as a bakery for years and we’re ready for the restaurant to get the same attention. We’re excited that dineLA will introduce Mäni’s cuisine to a new clientele.”

Encouraging Angelinos to experience all the town has to offer in culinary excellence, dineLA Restaurant Week presents a selection of specially priced, three-course menus from some of LA’s best eateries. Mäni’s refuses to let the term “pre-fix” limit the restaurant’s offerings for the two-week event. Customers will have diverse options for first, second, and third course fare, priced at only $15 for lunch and $25 for dinner. The extensive menu can be mixed and matched for infinite possibilities. Appetizers such as Mäni’s famous Vegetarian or Turkey Chili, fresh soup of the day or Caesar salad caters to any appetite. An endless list of entrees including Mäni’s burgers, gourmet salads or mouth-watering sandwiches will satisfy any craving. Icing on the cake: one of Mäni’s famous desserts to top off the meal.

Since 1989 Mäni’s on Fairfax has been satisfying discriminating palates and sweet-tooths alike. The restaurant has become a favorite for the Hollywood community and is frequently called upon by industry A-listers as the dining spot of choice. Offering a comfortable and engaging environment, the café is the perfect backdrop for LA dining at its best. In 2005 Mäni’s responded to growing customer interest by launching http://www.manisblogcafe.com, an educational site dedicated to offering nutritional, lifestyle and health information about Mäni’s cuisine.

The blog also allows Mäni’s guests to interact with their opinions and feedback. The restaurant’s uncompromising commitment to providing wholesome gourmet food made from the most high-quality ingredients has resulted in its simple motto: Good & Good For You. Mäni’s is open daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert inside the comfortable dining room or coveted outdoor patio. Sunday-Thursday 8AM-11PM, Friday-Saturday, 8AM-Midnight. Coffee and morning pastries from 6:30AM Monday-Friday, 7AM on Saturday and 7:30AM on Sundays.

Sponsors and media partners of dineLA Restaurant Week include American Express, The Los Angeles Times, Clear Channel Radio, KTLA, Princess Cruises, and American Airlines. For more information, please visit: dineLA.com.

CHOCOLATE CAKE TASTING THAT’S GOOD FOR YOUR HEART
Mäni’s Bakery raises $2000 for Camp Max Straus, benefiting underserved L.A. youth

Los Angeles – Last night, Mäni’s Bakery Café premiered their new healthy flourless chocolate cake at a tasting event with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Camp Max Straus.  The tasting event raised just over $2000 in a three-hour period and with approximately 40 attendees and donations related to the event.  The event also brought out a few surprise visitors, with a number of invited guests from Mäni’s owner, Larry Maiman, and other Mäni’s patrons disclosing they had once been campers at Camp Max Straus as well.

Mäni’s new flourless chocolate cake uses fruit juice reduction and Scharffenberger dark chocolate.  The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that dark chocolate can lower high blood pressure and is rich in antioxidants.

Camp Max Straus provides year-round residential and weekend mentoring programs for underserved children between the ages of 7-12 who primarily come from single (or substitute) parent homes regardless of their ability to pay.  The camp is non-denominational and is owned and operated by Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles. It serves approximately 1,500 children each year.

Cheeta's 75th Birthday Party

Cheeta the Chimp turned 75 and was lucky enough to have his birthday cake made by Mäni’s on Fairfax.
image
He’s pictured here on the cover of West magazine, a section of Sunday’s LA Times

Cheeta became famous in 1934 when he starred in the original Tarzan movie with Johnny Weissmuller.  While living in Palm Springs, his sweets have been limited.
image
Mäni’s to the rescue… Cheeta’s birthday cake was our Chocolate Raspberry Fortress cake, sweetened with our famous fruit juice reduction, and made to look very festive in hot yellow with pink and blue frosting.  He really appreciated having that cake and being able to eat the whole thing without throwing off his blood sugar level.

If you missed the article in print on Sunday go to The whole story of Cheeta, Cheeta Speaks, from West magazine, LA Times: April 22, 2007

Mani's Blog is Featured in MyBusiness Mag

MyBusinessMag.com has featured Mani’s Bakery Blog in the April/May issue.

The article reveals my initial skepticism about blogging, way back in 2005, but as you know, we consider it an integral part of Mani’s now.  You can read the article, Blogging for Business, and then let us know what you think in the comments below.

Good enough for a King and his crew!

imageThis is kind of cool!  We got a huge order today from the hit TV show, “The King of Queens.” I was trying to imagine what Kevin James, Leah Remini, and Jerry Stiller were going to eat.  What do you think would be their favorite item on the menu?  Post a comment below and we will imagine together.  (Truth is I don’t even know if they were eating our food.  For all I know it was for the crew.  But it is fun to dream a little.)

Dance Spirit Magazine mentions Mäni's

A previous team member here at Mäni’s is an amazing dancer.  She let us know that we were mentioned in the December issue of a Dance Spirit Magazine.  Here is what they said, “Satisfy your sweet tooth with the sugarless and organic offerings at Mani’s on Fairfax. Bakery goodies await, as well as diet-friendly breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.” (page 74)

Summer's Not Over....Yet!

Don’t be fooled!  Labor Day is not the true ending of summer.  We still have another 18 days to go!  For those of you who spent the weekend at the beach, barbeques, pool parties, or just relaxing with friends or family, you still have some more summer living!

Summer doesn’t officially end until the Autumnal Equinox begins.  On September 23rd, the sun will cross the celestial equator.  This basically means that the degree at which the earth is positioned in it’s rotation around the sun, is such that the suns rays are hitting directly at the equator.  Whereas, at the beginning of summer, the sun rays hit at the tropic of cancer.

What happens?  Every point on Earth will, for one day, experience 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of daylight.  And then?  The daylight begins to get shorter as we approach winter, the South Pole the will begin to see the first appearance of the sun in six months, and the North Pole will be bracing for six months of darkness. image
So, stay with the warmth until it actually goes away, and everything starts to change.  Enjoy our summer fare while it lasts, because when fall hits, we will have all sorts of new things on our menu for you to try.

New T-Shirts! Plus, Public Appearances....

Not a moment too soon after being in Vanity Fair’s Oscars Time guide to Los Angeles, Mani’s blog article on Vanity Fair’s Oscar insert did we appear in another publication.  Frontiers Magazine, the leading gay community magazine in Los Angeles, recently put out their 2006 “Good Eats” issue.  image

I’m proud to report, that Mäni’s was listed as one of four top notch, natural and organic restaurants. Frontiers, over the last year or so, has revitalized their publication catering to a wider audience.  From guides to eating, to stories about opera singers, Frontiers is a great read.

image imageAnd, if you want to share in our excitement, you can now buy our beautiful new t-shirts.  They are printed front and back on American Apparel shirts, sweatshop free apparel, and they sell for $18.  They are desinged by Kun Che, or UNO LA.  Kun Che is a friend of ours who took our concept and foundation, and turned them into a beautiful design of our different natural sweeteners.  If you can’t guess what the front of the t-shirt is, I’ll tell you when you stop by.
Thanks for all of your support.  Sincerely,
Carl Avery

Vanity Fair: It's Oscar Time

In the current issue, March 2006 edition of Vanity Fair Magazine, you will find Mäni’s Bakery Café , nestled in the “Guide to a Perfect Day in L.A.”

In December, we spoke with Condé Nast about the possibility of being in their Magazine, Vanity Fair.  We sent everything off, and didn’t hear anything back, until today!

The “Mr. Smith” of the article finds himself in need of a cake and cookies for a friend’s Birthday Party, and stops by Mäni’s Bakery Cafe for sugar free desserts.  Looking quite dapper, and carrying a gift wrapped box, Mr. Smith is quite pleased with his selection.

Of course, as many of you know, we are the place in LA to get cakes for any occasion.  If I might take a moment just to tell you my favorites, and how to choose a cake!  I always have customers tell me their first preference, chocolate or no chocolate?  Vegan or not vegan?  Sugar-free, or organic evaporated cane sugar.  Those are the three most important questions.  And from there, it gets easier.  Oh yes, my favorites are the Chocolate Raspberry Fortress Cake (Fruit Juice Sweetened), and the Strawberry Forever Cake (Organic Cane Sugar).

Really, choosing anything from our case stocked to the brim with naturally and alternatively sweetened bakery items, is done this way.  So, come prepared, or not, and let us help you choose the appropriate desserts for your party, casual get together, or intimate Valentine’s Dessert.  Thanks to Vanity Fair and Condé Nast!

Carl

Mäni's Bakery Café Announces Their Newest Sweet Spot

Hollywood bakery-to-the-stars opens communication to customers with a new blog.

Los Angeles, CA (October, 2005) - Mäni's Bakery Cafe, an independent eatery that specializes in healthy alternatives to baked goods and cuisine, announced today the launch of their new blog manisblog.com. Dubbed as the Hollywood bakery to the stars, Mäni's has become famous in the Los Angeles community for being one of the first cafes to integrate organic and less refined ingredients into their baked goods and fare. Much of Mäni's acclaimed offerings are prepared with organically grown wheat flour and ingredients that retain more nutritional value than what is found in typical baked goods. Mäni's motto to offer good food that is good for you, has created best selling items such as the Chocolate Truffle Cream Heart Cookie and their famous turkey chili, which has attracted celebs including Kate Beahan and Lucia Rijker.

"Mäni's blog will serve as a virtual suggestion box, as well as a way to communicate both important and interesting health-related information directly to our clientele," says founder Larry Maiman. "With healthy eating at the top of everyone's minds, it is vital that we take another step towards opening a dialogue with our customers."

Mäni's Bakery Café, which opened its doors in 1989 and is still at its original location on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, felt a priority to interact with customers - something few in the industry have chosen to do. In addition to offering the most up-to-date information about what the restaurant and bakery are doing to make food healthier, the blog will be an educational format that promises to offer nutritional, lifestyle and health information as well as recommended links to other sites in the industry.
