Increasing Energy Through Good Nutrition
by Guest Author Jackie Keller

Today's fast-paced work environment is filled with more responsibilities and pressures than ever before. It is not uncommon to wish for more hours in a day, or more energy to make things happen faster and more efficiently. By practicing healthy nutrition habits you can become better able to handle what ever comes your way! Here are some suggestions-

If You Need a Lift...

Eat five smaller meals a day rather than three large ones, to keep your "fuel supply" constant. Your brain and nervous system rely on food to function properly and to keep you thinking clearly. Skipping meals, especially breakfast can make you feel fatigued because your body is lacking food for energy.

Choose foods that are high in complex carbohydrates and fiber, but low in sugar. Such foods include whole grain breads and cereals and other high fiber foods. Complex carbohydrates give you sustained energy, but foods high in sugar bring your energy up only temporarily, then brings it way down which leaves you feeling tired. Many fat free, high carbohydrate snack foods such as cookies, cakes and muffins may also contain large amounts of sugar and calories. These may not be the best choice to boost you energy.

Eat a low fat, balanced diet for optimal energy. Foods that are high in fat tend to take longer time to digest, and ultimately slow you down. Eating a low fat lunch containing both protein and carbohydrates is the best choice to keep you going through the day. Consider alternative protein sources, such as beans and tofu.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you're feeling low on energy it may mean your body is somewhat dehydrated and needs water. Unfortunately, by the time the body signals that you are thirsty, you are already deficient in water. Therefore, it is important to drink water constantly, even though you may not feel thirsty. Try to stay away from caffeinated beverages because they can also make you feel jittery and more easily stressed, and tend to have a diuretic effect, causing you to actually lose more liquids through increased urination..

Snack on something in between meals. If you eat three meals a day, there maybe a big gap in time from one meal to the next. Your body needs a healthy snack to keep the energy and brain waves flowing. Consider a piece of fruit, cut up vegetables or low fat pretzels, crackers or energy bars. Add in string cheese, cottage cheese or yogurt for protein.

Exercise at some point during the day. Exercise invigorates you and releases built up stress, and is the best way for the body to burn fat. Work out in the morning before work, during a lunch or afternoon break or some time after work. Any time you can exercise is a good time to do it. Fitting in a half hour walk during the day can increase your energy levels and metabolism.
